I recently transferred to Weber State University from the University of Memphis. Yes, I am the girl with the southern accent that no one can understand, but I like it. When I am talking to someone, they have to truly listen to what I say. This concept reminds me of art. When I am designing, I have to truly listen to what my design is saying or it simply does not work. Art has always been a very important part of my life. Learning new aspects of art like design composition and designing with colors really intrigue me! Two years ago, I got inspired by a local designer in Mississippi to become a graphic designer. That local Designer was my teacher, he was a graphic designer and his designs were very artistic and flattering. After I learned that Graphic Design was the communication with an audience with graphics and composition, I was hooked.
Moving to Utah has inspired me even further to follow my dreams. In the south there are not very many opportunities and Utah has really shown me that I can become a Graphic Designer. My dream is to work for a design firm and eventually become an art director and maybe even own my own firm one day. I also have a passion for illustration and printmaking. I think it would be awesome to incorporate printmaking into my designs. My dedication to graduating with Graphic Design will never end, and I will never give up. As you will notice in my works, I have not achieved a specific style in my designs. I have seen many students around me do the same style on every project. I feel that rather than focusing on one style, you should focus on the process of that style and becoming a better graphic designer as you progress. Becoming skilled in many aspects, will help further my future career in graphic design.
“Graphic Design is the purposeful combination of words, pictures and other visual elements to support the communication of an explicit or implicit message.” This quote is said by Michael Bierut. He is a Graphic Designer that I find inspirational. When I reviewed his portfolio, I could tell that he has a handle on typography and color. Some of the goals I would like to achieve for my career as a graphic designer is to learn to be more aggressive with color in my designs, absolutely be able to relate to all aspects of typography and designing typography, and to be aware of the meanings I create in my designs. I feel that each day I am getting closer to these goals, and I cannot wait for the day that I look back and realize that my goals and dreams became a reality.
